B/W 2011 flickr matrix
The B/W Matrix 2011.
View as a Slideshow.
I have a strange feeling about some of the pictured taken in the first half of the year: they look to me very old, like I took them ages ago.
That is probably because I went through many cameras this year: leicas, bessas, fed, kiev etc. and every camera has a micro universe of its own and its affecting the style.
Anyway, enjoy -- and Happy NY!

Conjunction

This is again taken taken with Kiev-4am. Wonderful camera in the need of better 50mm lens and an external viewfinder.

Behind the glass

This photo had been taken with old soviet Kiev 4am camera from 80s. The model is based on wartime Contax; it is heavy balky beast; I liked it a lot. The lens, 53mm f/1.8 Helios 103, is sharp but very flare-prone. The rangefinder, while somewhat awkward in use, is precise. I think it has one of the widest bases among all the 35mm rangefinders. All in all, I glad I brought this piece of aluminium, iron and glass from Russia where I bought it for 650 rubles AKA $20:)

Poor Penny Carson

I saw "Poor" Penny Carson downtown last week, with his dummy, preaching the sermon.
"Ronald Wilson Reagan is the first sign of the beast..."
The puppet what's attracting the attention, not the sermon. His "Sweetpea Johnson". I've heard he is doing this for 30+ years all over the States and this is his third puppet.
The puppet's mouth moves up and down, up and down as Carson preaches aloud.
One more step.
Another town.

November in Kazan

These are from my November trip to Russia. Taken with Olympus Digital Pen camera/17mm lens in Kazan, Russia. Kazan is the town I spent the most of my life in, from 1974 to 2002. It changed dramatically since I left it but still, it is my town and I love it no matter what. I had been delighted to see that much snow, to be in cold weather after all the years in Miami damp, and to see my relatives and friends.

Little Havana

I started walking the Little Havana neighborhoods. It is not that deserted and it is definitely very different from the Downtown I'm already getting tired of. This one had been taken this week on SW 1st Street.

Another Woman

This image had been taken during the 2011 Miami Photo Walk on Lincoln Road in South Beach. The street scene is a reflection in "Victoria's Secret" store's window. This is digital, captured on Olympus Digital Pen EP1 camera with 17mm lens and processed in Photoshop to imitate a cross-type film development.

Metromover

We were riding Metromover in Downtown Miami with Juan Reyes, founder of Street Photography Club of Miami, and discussing "shooting from the hip" street photography technique. During this conversation I took the image of this guy standing next to us. Olympus Stylus Epic camera, Tri-X 400 film rated ISO 1600 in Diafine.

Wind from the sea

First time the "M" letter in camera's "Bessa R3M" name had gotten a use: the battery died that night but the camera, been fully manual, worked. I just happened to have an external exposure meter and used it instead of the internal.

On high heels

It is October and the weather is slowly becoming better suited to street photography. Can't wait for the first cold wave. This is Tri-X at 1600 in Diafine; the camera was Olympus Stylus Epic.

Downtown at night

It is EMPTY. People park their lexuses and infinities at the lower floors and take elevators to their condos. They live in these ivory towers as in high-walled fortresses, guarded by sleepy attendants at the ground floors. The Downtown is left to rare passing cars and homeless folks; they sleep on the sidewalks here and there.
Again, Bessa R3M rangefinder/35mm lens/Tri-X developed in 2xDiafine to E.I.=3200.

Night at Calle Ocho

I keep returning to Calle Ocho. True, it is limited to the couple of streets and not very crowded. It is boring at times. But, its also one of the few places in Miami where there is a real street life. So here it is again, Little Havana, taken on Tri-X with my Bessa R3M rangefinder/35mm lens and developed in 2xDiafine to E.I.=3200.

In the Rain

Front window of Metromover's car made a nice filter in this photograph taken with small Olympus Stylus camera on Tri-X film and then developed in Diafine to E.I. of 1600.

A place under the Sun

He was holding his hands crossed behind the back of his head and looking straight up. Beautiful moment. He looked at me when I pointed my camera at him...of well...I took it anyway.

This phone is broken. Who did it?

This was taken with Olympus XA camera, beautiful old P&S. I liked it more then I actually anticipated when I first hold it in my hands. It is aperture priority rangefinder, I use it as a scale camera most of the time but here I actually used the rangefinder and it did the job. The film was Ilford HP5 at E.I.800 developed in Diafine.

The Life and Death of Black Plastic Bag

...I waited.
It rolled, slowly crossing the shadow toward me
I snapped it when it reached the sidewalk
it lost the air and died silently
RIP
