Curious case of double exposure

Here, pictured in the uncut grass of my backyard, sits Brownie camera I received last February from *bay seller. It is ancient No 2A model from the early 20s. This very simple box camera has one speed rotary-type shutter and 3 Waterstop apertures...that's it. I bought is because there was a roll of exposed film inside. The film turned out to be a 116 Kodak Verichrome Pan. Now, Verichrome Pan is later film, went on sale in mid-50s. It is also known for preserving the latent image very well. So, 4 minutes in very cold and very active developer and...

Kiev 4am/35mm Jupiter Lens/Plus-X at E.I.400 in Diafine.
Tomorrow I am leaving for my seasonal Russian vacation and still debating what camera/cameras to take there...probably Contax with 50mm lens and Tri-X...it is dark there, I am going to need all the contrast I can master.

Friday's Night Catch

KT3200-15-26pr1sm
Leica M2 has become my #1 camera for night work. Tried: Leica IIIf, Nikon F5, Nikon S, Contax IIa...you name it. M2 is a clear winner. The lenses are 35mm and 28mm (this is 28mm).

Kodak discontinues TMax P3200 TMZ film :(

British Journal Of Photography

Sad news. The film is the one I use every week, my nocturnal companion...oh well

Wednesday in Little Havana

AR400-251-04pr3sm

This had been taken with Kiev 4AM + 35mm Jupiter f/2.8 lens -- one of the few the soviet era setups I have. Came to like this cruel piece of machinery after some trial and error.

Ocean drive's nights in September

KT3200-12-17pr1sm

The film has its limits; when the light is as weak as it usually is at the Ocean at night its failing to record anything at all, even at the sensitivity as high as 12500.
Still, people at night are open as never during the day and I just keep shooting, hoping for the sudden glimpse on the subject, just like in the picture above and below...

"Nash Chelovek v Maimi"

"Nash Chelovek v Miami" can be translated from Russian as "Our Man in Miami".
It is a heading of an article on my photography and other things just published in "Kazan" magazine. "Kazan" is a paper publication on art and culture; it is based in my native town of Kazan, Russia (Tatarstan province). Here is the link to the web version of the article:

Every Day Is A Sun Day!

AR400-230-24pr1sm

I remember my very first day in Miami 10 years ago. We flown from Moscow to NY and then to MIA where a relative pick us up. It was August 2002, same time of the year. There were waves of heat coming in every day, night rains, resulting in the humid sauna outside of the house we stayed. Everything was so new, so unusual to norther the people like us...not anymore. I am much better managing the weather now. I move slowly in the shadows and survive easily in the streets for a long time, taking pictures. Here are few from the last week:

South beach nights

ID3200-12-23pr1sm
Night is the only time when I can shoot comfortably these summer days. Even at night --- this one was hot (87F) and humid -- the feel and the load of subtropical summer never goes away.
Shooting streets at night is tricky:
- the light is unpredictable;
- exposure error is rather a norm;
- bracketing rarely helps;
- focusing is unreliable, both manual or AF,
and despite of all of this I love the view of night-time pictures and how people open to the simple emotions in the dark. Again, Satursday's South Beach was packed with people, celebrating life and I had my glimpse of it. Here another second for you:

On Joan Colom

Joan Colom is Spanish (Catalan) photographer from Barcelona.
Born in 1921, he started taking street pictures in the "red lights" district El Barrio Chino (i.e. Chinatown, now "Raval") at the age of 37.
He had a day time job in accounting and use to shoot during weekends.
I love his style partially because of my addiction to shooting candids "from the hip".
Almost all of his images from 1958 to 1964 were shot "clandestine".
He did this because he tried to capture something very elusive: the glances, gestures, grimaces, poses, all king of people-to people interactions.
He wanted for his pictures to be emotional and alive, to capture the life in its moments and let it live in the photographic form forever.
And he succeeded.
I do not know any other photographer of the time so dedicated to this idea of capturing moments of life as Joan Colom was.
Here is he shooting in Raval with his Leica M2:

You see why the most of his pictures are verticals (i.e. "portrait" orientation).

The Shadow

AR400-79-12pr1sm

I had not been shooting much lately and the films I still have developed do not give anything interesting; I fished this one from the old 2011's pile while looking through my archive for something else. It is Bessa R3M/35mm lens on Tri-X film rated at 1600 in Diafine.

Too loud

AR400-216-06pr1sm

I came across this gentleman at a festival in Overtown Miami this weekend; he was comfortably listening to Nicole Henry's singing with fingers in his ears. Don't get the message wrong: she's a great singer; its is just the amplification was indeed at the highest possible setting.

Ten rules for him who wishes to be a painter a photographer

I an reading Salvador Dali's hilarious book (50 Secrets Of Magic Craftsmanship, 1947) and couldn't help but edit his "10 rules of painter" to apply them to photography. Enjoy:)

Walking Downtown

HP5-84-15pr1sm It is a rare occasion when I develop a film the same day it had been exposed, like today. I saw this "mummy" holding the door on SE 3rd Avenue, close to Biscayne; shot few frames with Olympus P&S I always have with me; this is the better one out of 3 or 4. It hold no meaning or morale; has no story to tell; everything it has is purely visual -- just what I'm looking for:)

Winwood in June

AR400-206-24pr1sm Winwood is a neighborhood just North of Overtown; colorful, strange and beautiful. It has Art and Fashion sub-districts. Out of two, I like the Fashion; primarily because of the people. It is full of small humble shops swarming with customers during the day, at the same time, it is still Winwood -- with all the colors (which I proudly ignore with my B&W setups) and all the murals/graffities...plus, of course, the famous signature of the place: the emptiness. I've been there last May with the folks from Miami Street Photography Club, had a chance to use my Bessa L and my Nikon F5; all in all the time well spent

Nikon Nights: myths debunked

KT3200-03-27pr1sm It had been my believe for ages that a rangefinder is the best camera for available light/night time candid street photography, and it still is...with one bold exception: Nikon F5 SLR. Heavy big camera just won't shake at all. It is stable in hands as it is attached to the tripod -- well, almost. Plus, it has interchangeable viewfinders I love; use them to compose from the low view point; like the bright high magnification finder DW-31 or the convenient waist level finder DW-30. Add to the recipe Ilford Delta 3200 or Kodak Tmax P3200 film pushed to 12500 ASA and you have the best film-based night-time street setup ever! Of course it is BIG, BOLD and HEAVY camera and I have been noticed and frowned at much more often when with F5 than with my leicas but the results are stunning and I don't care. Let it fly!

Summer is here!

HP5-75-24pr2sm This blog had been static for some time; I was too preoccupied with my office job. But, I never stop shooting. So I have some pictures to post. This one (above) is of particular value to me because it had been pre-meditated. I envisioned it first and then waited for the missing human element. It finally came out of nowhere and cornered the building; I pushed the button and my Nikon F5/Ilford HP5+/some Diafine did the rest:) Now let's add few more from the same period in May, taken in downtown Miami. Enjoy:

The Heat Wave

HP5-63-23pr1sm
The heat is coming in waves, interrupted by short evening rains and warm humid nights. It is hard to stay in the streets more than an hour. To lure myself out, I bought a new old camera -- beautiful and heavy Nikon F5 -- and now trying it for street photography:) Most of the pictures in this post were still taken with Olympus Stylus Epic P&S; the last two are Nikon F5 with 50mm lens; Ilford HP5+ film exposed at E.I.800 and developed in Diafine.

The last few days of decent weather...

AR400-202-03pr1sm
The hot and humid South Florida summer is around the corner; it is becoming increasingly hard to stay in the streets for a long time. Shot on Tri-X 400 with Bessa L/25mm. The last two are night shots on Ilford Delta 3200 film exposed at E.I.8000 in Leica M2 camera with 21mm Voigtlander lens and developed to E.I.12500 in Tmax Developer (13 min at 74F/25C)
